In St Leonard’s Church at Holwell there are two wall plaques, relating to WW2.
One plaque is in memory of Cyril Stapleford – click on his link to view what information we have about him.
The other plaque reads “The restoration of this church was made in 1948 by the generosity of Lieut. Colonel J.D.Player of Friars Well, Wartnaby, who was killed in action in the Middle East in 1943.” The Player family had a tobacco factory in Nottingham and purchased the former Vicarage in Wartnaby as a private residence.
Lt. Col. John Dane Player 29981 served in the Nottinghamshire Yeomanry, Royal Armoured Corps and died on 25th April 1943, aged 40. He is remembered at Enfidaville War Cemetery, in Tunisia. Enfidaville was one of the last battles the Allied Eighth Army fought in North Africa.
